"WE SHOULD BE LIKE LIKE CRISPIN PORTER"

That is what I said to Pooli the other day, about 3:00 in the morning while we were NSACing.

Like Crispin Porter is an imaginary agency like Crispin Porter. Go to their site, its hilarious, you'll love it. Trust me.

"At Like Crispin Porter we create work that is like Crispin Porter's work. Of course Like Crispin Porter is not exactly the same as Crispin Porter. We don't have clients. Or an office. Or a staff. In that sense I guess we could have called ourselves Like Grey Worldwide Canada. But we didn't. Because we're Like Crispin Porter."

"Why can't we be cool too? Why can't we be Like Crispin Porter? Why, why why? I think we can. We just need a client. One client. Any client. Here client, client. Here client, client."

that's a joke, but some brands do it for real.

If you were at the CP+B event at USC, you would have heard the speaker there say that magic happened when they convinced Burger King that they didn't have to be like Mc Donalds. Burger King became successful.

Apple doesn't try to be like Windows. Apple is Apple, and, subsequently are a cultural icon. Once you are like, then you are not. I am therefore I am not like? Sum Ergo "not like"........?

Seth wonders:

"about the McDonald's redesign.

Sure looks like Starbucks. Will it work?

The challenge McDonald's faces is not to be like Starbucks. Why? Because Starbucks is already like Starbucks. The challenge is to to tell a story to the existing McDonald's fan, a story that combines fresh and comfortable with the stuff they've always liked and trusted (the place is cheap, and it feels cheap, which makes it easier to bring the baseball team...)"

Who are we?

WHAT DO YOU CALL A STUDENT ADVERTISING AGENCY THAT GOES TO THE DISTRICT 15 COMPETITION AND WINS FIRST PLACE?

Circle Advertising.

Sure, we won an OC student Addy for last years competition entry and a Southern California Silver for that same spot.

But this year Chapman Universities team took home the first place NSAC District 15 award, Chapman Universities first ever. Stunning, but not surprising, considering the talent in this particular group.

Who is this mysterious group of winners? Take a look at a brief history of the brief history of Chapman Ad Club and circle advertising.

Fall 2002 - Chapman Adclub is formed - Leigh, President; Brian, Promotions chair, Stephanie B, Kate Lennon, Me (Evan), Membership chair; a handful of others, our advisor Carolyn Coal and a dream - impress members of the opposite sex.

Spring 2003 - Chapman Adclub loses its advisor to "an offer [she] could not refuse". Is the Chapman Adclub dead before it even got off the ground? No, due to the resilience of the board and the help of Janell Shearer we stayed afloat. We even had a few great events -- membership was on the rise.

-Leigh graduated went of to work for Arnold, Kate was voted in as president.

Fall 2003 and Spring 2004 - Cory became our advisor. We got a logo that, to this day, Job contends is the worst logo he has ever seen. Also a mission statement. I can't remember it. And we changed our spelling for Adclub to Ad Club.

Oh and we entered the NSAC competition, the 7 of us. We had no idea what we were getting into. We named our team Circle Advertising. We got a logo that, to this day, Job says is the second worst logo he has ever seen.

We got 8th. San Diego State won.

Fall 2004 - Now Sam is president, Both Stephy Pool (the new girl) and I are Co-competition Chairs (a position that no longer exists). We reinvented Circle, added tap-dancing, departments with department heads and the "roadmap".

We made Jeremy.

We talked about Identity.

We took fourth, and an award for best presenter. UCLA won.

Fall 2005 - Fresh off the momentum from the previous year Job Hall and Zack Marker are chosen as Account Executives. The product was Postal Vault.

We did lots of research.

We interviewed top executives.

We dressed up grown men (and a woman) in costumes.

We tap-danced once.

We rolled up in a motor home.

We doubled it.

April, 2006 We took home 1st place, UCLA took second.
